7 Days of Service:
Safeguarding Mothers, Welcoming Healthy Futures
As
part of the 7 Days of Service initiative, the Rotary and Rotaract family along
Entebbe Road turned their focus to one of Rotary’s most urgent priorities:
Maternal and Child Health. The project, carried out at Kitala Health Centre II,
aimed to support expectant mothers with the resources, care, and knowledge they
need for safe pregnancies and dignified deliveries.
The
need was clear. Consultations with health workers, local leaders, and mothers
themselves revealed gaps in antenatal services and a lack of essential delivery
supplies. Many women faced challenges accessing prenatal education, while
others struggled to prepare for childbirth due to limited resources. To
respond, Rotarians and Rotaractors designed a program that combined immediate
support with long-term impact.
Over
the course of the project, more than 100 expectant mothers were reached through
antenatal outreach sessions led by qualified health professionals. These
sessions provided practical education on safe pregnancy practices, nutrition,
and newborn care, while creating space for mothers to ask questions and receive
personalized guidance.
In
addition, mothers were equipped with Mama Kits, each containing the essential
items needed for safe deliveries. For many, this meant peace of mind knowing
they would not face the burden of purchasing supplies they could not afford.
For health workers, the kits allowed them to deliver care more effectively and
safely.
The
impact was immediate. Mothers expressed relief and gratitude, with many noting
that they felt more confident about their pregnancies and better prepared for
childbirth. Families benefited from the assurance of safer deliveries, while
the wider community gained renewed awareness of the importance of maternal
health.
Sustainability
was built into the project’s design. Knowledge gained from the outreach
sessions will guide mothers in future pregnancies and be shared with peers,
amplifying the impact across the community. Health centre staff and community
health workers are now better equipped to provide follow-up care and reinforce
positive practices. Perhaps most importantly, the partnership formed between
Rotary and Kitala Health II laid a strong foundation for ongoing maternal
health initiatives in the area.
The
7 Days of Service: Maternal and Child Health initiative reaffirmed
Rotary’s commitment to ensuring that every mother and child can thrive. By
blending compassion, education, and practical support, Rotary and Rotaract gave
mothers not just kits and care, but confidence, dignity, and hope for healthier
futures.
